The Workshops have Commenced
Monday began with a slight difference in opinion. The girls decided to do the crazy thing and wake up at 6:30am to do a morning workout whereas the boys chose the lucrative option (after the previous days exploits) of getting few more hours sleep before the outreach workshop commenced. Breakfast was more functional than flavoursome with a combination of porridge and toast which set us up nicely for the workshops of the day. Meeting the workshop guys and girls was not what we expected, upon entering the room hands were shaken and laughs abundant. This set the tone for the remainder of the days ahead, delivery wasn’t an us and them thing it was a together thing.
The outreach workshop started well with a few students taking the lead in a few areas, focussing conversations on the worth of learning and the different ways in which individuals can learn. After lunch and a catch up with our Malawian friends the afternoon focussed on reflection and why it might be important when teaching. I got me thinking about last semesters work… Anyway after a very thought provoking day, we were all exhausted! However, the boys with unrivalled enthusiasm tried to follow the girls’ earlier exploits and their first piece of heart rate increasing activity in over 5 days!
Tuesday’s workshop went well, and there is a feeling of having been here for months even though it has only been days. Team members are laughing and joking with each other and our Malawian friends as if they have known each other for years. After another successful day of workshops that revisited earlier ideas of reflection, the next task was to wash our clothes… minus a washing machine. This involved a lot of elbow grease and using muscles we never thought possible!! It ultimately ended in a somewhat fulfilling (if feeble) attempt to clean our clothes whilst having great fun, conversations and jokes with new found friends.
